Believe it or not, tooth decay is one of the most common oral health conditions among children in the United States. However, the good news is that modern dentistry offers several safe and effective ways of addressing it, one of which is silver diamine fluoride. Often abbreviated as SDF, it’s a simple solution that can both stop existing cavities from getting worse and keep new ones from forming in the first place! Here’s what you need to know about it.
What Exactly Is Silver Diamine Fluoride?
Silver diamine fluoride is a colorless or blue-tinted liquid that has been cleared by the FDA and is used primarily for treating tooth sensitivity. It’s also widely used to halt the progression of tooth decay and to prevent new cavities from developing. SDF is mainly comprised of silver, which functions as an antimicrobial, and fluoride, which helps to promote the remineralization of enamel, or the outermost layer of teeth. It also includes a small amount of ammonia used as a stabilizer.
Applying SDF to teeth is remarkably simple and perfectly safe. The liquid can be brushed directly onto the surface of the tooth with no drilling, no anesthesia, and no removal of healthy tooth structure required. It’s normally dried with gentle, compressed air, and patients are instructed not to eat or drink for about half an hour. The whole application process takes just a few minutes, making it especially well-suited for young children or kids who experience dental anxiety.
It should be noted that SDF can cause a dark stain on treated areas of decay. However, this is a normal, harmless side effect and actually signals that the treatment is working by hardening and neutralizing the cavity!
SDF vs. Dental Sealants: What’s the Difference?
Dental sealants have long been the gold standard for cavity prevention in children. They work by painting a thin plastic coating over the chewing surfaces of the back teeth that are most prone to decay, creating a physical barrier that keeps out food particles and bacteria. Sealants are highly effective, but they require a clean, dry tooth surface to adhere properly, as well as some level of cooperation by the patient.
SDF works slightly differently; rather than physically sealing off the tooth’s surface, it works on a chemical level. The silver component kills the bacteria causing the decay, while the fluoride hardens and remineralizes the affected enamel. This means SDF can do something sealants simply cannot: it can address an existing cavity and prevent it from progressing further!
Silver diamine fluoride is a fast, painless, and proven way to fight one of the most common health problems kids face. If you’re curious whether SDF or a dental sealant is a good fit for your child, the best next step is a conversation with their dentist.
