Learn More About the Benefits of MassHealth

a child with a healthy smile

In order to make the most of your MassHealth policy, your child should be attending all of their biannual checkups. This preventive dental care is typically covered in full—but more importantly, it prevents the need for more advanced, expensive care in the future. In other words, by bringing your little one in every six months, you’re greatly reducing their chances of suffering from a dental problem that’ll cost you a pretty penny to address! Continue reading below to learn more about how your MassHealth dental insurance policy is the secret to affordably assisting your little one’s growing smile!

MassHealth Coverage Availability & Fees

With so many various insurance plans available, it’s not always easy to generalize coverage for everyone—what’s covered in one plan might not be covered in another plan, as similar as the benefits might seem. However, when it comes to MassHealth, there are several different types of coverage, including MassHealth Standard, MassHealth CommonHealth, MassHealth CarePlus, and MassHealth Family Assistance, each offering different benefits packages. That said, you can usually expect the benefits to look something like this:

  • Around 100% coverage for preventive services, including checkups, cleanings, X-rays, and other adjacent services.
  • Between 50% to 80% coverage for minor restorative care and basic services, including things like fillings or simple extractions.
  • Up to 50% coverage for major restorative services, like crowns, or other, more intricate procedures.

As with most other insurance companies, MassHealth doesn’t typically cover the cost of cosmetic procedures, since they’re often considered elective and not medically necessary. On the other hand, emergency dental services are regularly covered.

You should also keep in mind that your insurance plan will likely come with a deductible and annual maximum. A deductible is the amount you can expect to pay before your coverage kicks in, and an annual maximum is a yearly spending limit on your policy.
