Why are Regular Dental Checkups & Cleanings Important for Kids?

There are actually several reasons the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends bringing your child in for a dental checkup and cleaning every six months. The first is that common oral health problems, like cavities, can fly under the radar undetected. In fact, it’s often not until your child is in immense pain that you even find out that something is wrong. Our goal is to protect their smile from harm and, if a dental problem does develop, address it right away.

The second reason that routine visits to our office are so important is because they allow us to clear away plaque from your child’s teeth and clean the hard-to-reach areas of their mouth. This goes a long way in preventing tooth decay and other oral health problems, especially when your child’s fine motor skills are developing or they aren’t as committed to their dental care regimen as they should be. Simply put, if it’s been more than six months since their last visit to our office, now is the time to schedule their next appointment!

What to Expect During a Dental Checkup

At your child’s checkup, they will meet with Dr. Clancy or Dr. Grieco, who will explain what to expect and do what they can to make them feel at ease. Then, they will take a look at their teeth, gums, jaw, and bite, looking for oral health problems, like cavities, in the process. If they do find anything concerning, they will bring it to your attention and share their recommendations on how to move forward. If everything looks good, then they will answer any questions you have and see you and your child at your next visit!
