Pacifiers can be lifesavers for young, fussy children, helping them settle down for naps and calming impending tantrums. But as your child grows and their teeth begin to develop, this comforting habit can start to affect their bite. Both pacifier use and thumb-sucking are common causes of issues that affect the position of the teeth and how the arches meet. That said, it’s worth knowing how to ensure your little one is using their pacifier the right way; here’s what you need to keep in mind.
How Can Pacifiers Affect Teeth?
Prolonged pacifier usage can lead to a common condition called “pacifier teeth,” which refers to the changes in tooth alignment and bite that can develop when a child sucks on a pacifier, thumb, or finger for an extended period of time.
The constant pressure from sucking can gradually push the front teeth forward or prevent them from coming in correctly, sometimes resulting in an open bite, which is where the upper and lower front teeth don’t meet when the mouth is closed. In more severe cases, it can also affect the shape of the roof of the mouth and the alignment of the jaw.
Pacifiers Can Still Be Used Responsibly
Not every child who uses a pacifier will develop alignment issues; occasional pacifier use in infancy is generally okay, and many toddlers who stop the habit early show little to no lasting effect on their bite.
The greatest problems arise when pacifier habits continue past the point when permanent teeth begin coming in, which can be as early as age 5. The same can be said about thumb-sucking, as both habits carry similar risks to dental development if they continue for too long or with too much intensity. Thankfully, there are several simple ways you can reduce the risk of pacifier-related dental issues:
- Try to limit pacifier use to naptime, bedtime, or moments of distress rather than allowing constant, all-day use.
- Ensure that your child is passively placing the pacifier inside their mouth, rather than letting them vigorously suck it.
- Aim to help your child wean off the pacifier by their second or third birthday, well before their permanent teeth start to emerge.
The bottom line is, while pacifiers are great for self-soothing and have their benefits, it’s best to ensure your child is using theirs the right way so that their teeth aren’t misaligned—because that will lead to bigger issues down the road.
