Nitrous Oxide Sedation

You may know this mild type of sedation dentistry by another name: laughing gas. In addition to being used for over 100 years in the dental field, this gentle and effective solution is safe for children and adults alike! So, if you think that it would be beneficial to add it to your child’s treatment plan, don’t hesitate to ask us if they are a candidate. In the meantime, you can read on to learn more about nitrous oxide.

Who is a Good Candidate for Nitrous Oxide?

Due to its mild nature, the large majority of patients are candidates for nitrous oxide. So, whether your child experiences minor dental nerves or struggles with severe dental-related anxiety, it’s worth scheduling an appointment with our Worcester dental team! Then, we can learn more about their medical and dental history in order to determine if laughing gas is ideal for them. If it’s not (which is often the case if your child has a condition that makes it difficult to breathe through their nose), then we will find a different solution.

How Does Nitrous Oxide Work?

The process of administering nitrous oxide is relatively simple, and it will begin when your child arrives for their appointment! Once they are comfortably settled into the treatment chair, we will simply place a small mask over their nose. Then, we will tell them to continue breathing through their nose, inhaling the colorless, odorless gas in the process. After a minute or two, they will start to feel warm and happy all over. All of their nerves will dissipate, and they will stay in a completely relaxed state throughout their entire time in the treatment chair.

Nitrous oxide offers numerous benefits, including the fact that the effects set in quickly. Another perk is that the effects dissipate quickly too! Once we remove the mask, it will only take a few minutes for your child to feel “normal” again. That means that you don’t need to worry about lingering grogginess or completely adjusting your family’s routine. Instead, your little one will be able to resume their usual day-to-day activities afterward! Of course, if you have any questions after you leave our Worcester office, you’re more than welcome to give us a call so we can provide you with the answers.
